This week we’re chatting with none other than the A P McCoy of pointing! Currently sat on a lifetime winning figure of 298, Lady Jockey Champion for 8 consecutive seasons & running a successful yard training pointers with her husband Tom, it is, of course, Gina Andrews in the spotlight today! Having also won the National Trainers Championship for the 20/21 season, Gina lives for the sport & continues to make records both in & out the saddle. Gina is the only female amateur jockey to have ridden out her claim under rules & also produces top National Hunt racehorses. We asked Gina a few burning questions about pointing & here’s what she had to say...
🏇 Whats your favourite aspect of pointing?
Definitely the mix of being able to educate young horses and jockeys as well it being highly competitive.
🏇 How did you get into pointing?
My mum and dad both rode/trained pointers so it’s was inevitable that I would follow in their footsteps!
🏇 How would you describe pointing to someone that hasn’t been before?
Weather depending, but pointing is the perfect opportunity for a great family day out in the countryside. It’s fun and competitive!
🏇P2P highlight?
My highlight would definitely have to be riding a 5 timer at our local meeting Mollington. A day I’ll never forget!
🏇If you could change one thing in pointing, what would it be?
I’d like to make pointing more affordable. It’s very expensive & there’s not a lot of insensitive to persuade owners not to go down the National hunt route, which I think is essential to keep the amateur sport going.
🏇 Where’s your favourite point-to-point & why?
Favourite point to point is Horseheath; it’s a great track that's always well maintained & a good success rate helps!
🏇 What’s your pointing career aim?
To beat the current record set by a lady rider (Polly Gundry) for the most amount of winners ridden ever which is 303!
🏇What’s your earliest pointing memory?
Going pointing with dad to Cottenham where he rode a treble. I sat in the changing room with him all day!
We’re looking forward to seeing Gina back out in the new season, chasing down those records & making new ones! #PPORA #GoPointing
