You’ve heard of the Oscars, the BAFTAs and racing’s Lesters and at this year’s PPORA Grassroots Awards Lunch we brought you the “Birdies” with 8 of our major award winners receiving specially commissioned cartoons from racing’s favourite cartoonist/caricaturist Darren Bird aka “Birdie”

Our annual celebration is a popular event and once again we hit capacity well in advance.  On the day  we were delighted to be joined by award winners, sponsors and guests, from the length and breadth of the country for good company, good food and drink and good most importantly fun throughout the afternoon.

A prosecco reception, supported by Rude Wines of Ledbury got events off to a flying start, before we sat down to a delicious four course lunch served to us by Stratford Racecourse’s new caterers Amadeus – so delicious in fact that one guest ate a fellow diner’s desert while he stepped away from the table!

Our Master of Ceremonies for the 3rd year in succession was, ITV Racing Presenter, Luke Harvey who brought his trademark good humour and wit to proceedings.

Luke is a great supporter of the PPORA and an ambassador for our sport, and so we decided to spring a surprise by awarding him the 2018  Equestrian Art International PPORA Chairman’s Award.  Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors Equestrian Art International Luke received a fabulous original oil painting by Vineta Sayer click here to read more.

A series of clues from Carolyn Tanner, including references to highly prized “vintage” coats and “invaluable pieces of string “, gradually led us to identify  Mick Easterby, patriarch of this year’s Jim Mahon Award winners the Easterby Family with Cherry Coward stepping up to accept the award.

Our guest speaker this year was Champion Jockey Richard Johnson, and he joined Luke “in conversation” before proposing a toast – kindly sponsored by the Coniston Hotel –  to the sport.  Richard then joined Justin Chittenden, from our sponsors Equine Health Centre, to present the  PPORA Point to Point Graduate Award to a rising star on the NH circuit, Bryony Frost.   Bryony then presented  our PPORA Pony Racing Graduate Award winner, Jack Tudor with his prize.  Read more about these awards and the winners by clicking here.

The IJF lucky tenner raffle – raised a healthy sum – including £4o in old £10 notes! – and three lucky winners went away from the lunch £150, £100 and £50 better off.  With an added donation from the PPORA  we’ll be sending the IJF £2000 towards the fantastic work that they do.

The Birdie cartoons we commissioned for our winners were an absolute hit – and Birdie joined us on the day to create a memento in watercolour of this year’s event.  The finished cartoon was auctioned at the end of the afternoon and the winning bidder Michael Bannister was a final addition to the picture.
