The 2018 – 2019 Wilkinson Sword (novice men)  and the Princess Royal Championships  (novice women) are prestigious contests, open to riders who, at the start of the season have yet to ride a winner under the rules of any recognised Racing Authority (including Point to Points and Arabian Horse Racing).

In recent seasons  the Wilkinson Sword has been a milestone on the way to a professional racing career for  jockeys Harry Cobden (2014 – 2015) and BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year 2018 nominee James Bowen (2016-2017) .

In  2018 we saw yet another talented youngster – Connor Brace – emerge from the Welsh Point to Pointing powerhouse.  Aged 16 Connor rode his first winner on board William Money in the first Dodson & Horrell PPORA Novice Riders’ Series Qualifier at the PPORC Point to Point at Barbury in November.  He continued to amass  a total of 21 wins between the flags –  giving him decisive victory in the Wilkinson Sword Award  – and rounded off his season with his first win over regulation fences in the White Swan Hotel Open Hunter Chase at Stratford on June 8th.  Connor has since joined the professional ranks as Conditional for fellow Point to Point Graduate Fergal O’Brien who provided Connor’s first winner Mighty Leader at Perth on September 10th click here to read more.

Yorkshire’s Jess Bedi, a textile design student who combines her studies with training and riding Pointers for her grandmother Sandra Barker, proved best of the new women riders under 21 in 2018.   Her 3 wins on board Iron Chancellor saw Jess crowned in the Howden Insurance Brokers Princess Royal Championship.  Her achievements and potential have been recognised with RSS sponsorship from Howden  for 2018 -2019  click here to read more
