First awarded in 1980 the Wilkinson Sword has been won by many novices who have gone on to become leading lights in the sport, in recent years it has also become a st a milestone on the way to a professional racing career for  jockeys such as Sean Bowen, Harry Cobden, James Bowen, and Connor Brace.

In 2019 the award was won by Durham University student George Chatterton, who struck up a strong partnership with Distime and Minella Friend, owned by his grandfather George, and trained by Chris Bealby.

The Wilkinson Sword was originally contested by both men and women, but in 2000 became a men’s championship contest following the introduction of the Princess Royal championship for women riders.
