Well trained, well ridden and gamely run! Nathan Rahman triumphs at in Merano’s prestigious two day meeting!
Point to Point jockey Nathan Rahman has enjoyed a remarkable summer of thrills and spills riding as an amateur at courses in Italy and Germany.
Returning to Merano, on the day that the course celebrated its 80th anniversary, Nathan scored his first success on Italian turf in today’s 10,000 Euro, 3500m Gentleman’s’ Cross Country Final.
Partnering Giuseppe and Attilio Trebeschi’s 10 year old Isaias, Nathan used his previous experience over the course to good effect, hugging the turns and giving no quarter Finding themselves in front when trailblazing Mentore took the wrong course, Isaias relished the lead, jumping and galloping his rivals into submission, and crossed the line to score by a comfortable 4 ½ lengths.
“I was apprehensive about today, the field was the strongest ever seen. After a bad fall yesterday I had my reservations. The race didn’t develop particularly well, a lot of the front runners didn’t know the course and made a lot of errors, which eventually played into my hands once the path was clear” explained Nathan whose experience over the course was put to good effect, hugging the turns and giving no quarter
“Isaias is a one paced runner so I knew I needed to make ground wherever possible” explained Nathan. At times he would get side tracked by wandering horses but in the end he would listen and keep to our intended course. Coming over the last I had no idea where the other horses were and it wasn’t till ½ furlong from the line I saw there was no-one around and eased up.”
Today’s victory was all the more remarkable given that Isaias began the summer as a 10 year old maiden over obstacles. Partnered by Nathan, he horse has progressed steadily through the placings from 4th to third and then second place on his previous outings.
“It was a great training success for Guiseppe and Attilio Trebeschi” continued Nathan, “they have never has a winner at this prestigious meeting, and their faith in me prevailed.”
With summer racing in Europe winding down Nathan, a corporal in the 1st Battalion Royal Welsh, who finished last season between the flags with an eye-catching victory in the Dunraven PPORA Novice Riders’ Championship Final at Edgcote, is now looking forward to the 2019 – 2020 Point to Point Season now just a few weeks away.
