Howden PPORA Jockey of the Month Awards
Sponsored by Howden, the PPORA Jockey of the Month Awards shine the spotlight on remarkable riding achievements from around the country, but it’s not just about riding the most winners it’s about recognising personal achievements in the widest sense of the word – as our 2016 -2017 winners illustrate.
2016- 2017 PPORA Jockey of the Month Award Winners
November – December Darren Edwards (Devon & Cornwall) for achieving his double century of winners -click here to read more.
January Rory Bevin (Midlands), 4th season novice rider, who rode his first double at Friars Haugh on January 22nd click here to read more. Rory finished the season with a win onboard Lough Inch in the PPORA Novice Riders Race at Tabley May 4th bringing his seasonal tally to 7 – a personal best.
February Philip Hall (South East) who rode Surging Seas to success in the SEH Club Members Maiden at Charing on February 19th before hanging up his riding boots click here to read more
March Evan David (Wales) for a 4 timer at the Suffolk’s Ampton meeting 19th of March click here to read more. Bouncing back from injury Evan had a strong season with 23 wins between the flags, 20 of which resulted from a winning partnership with Andrew Pennock, and a win in the Totepool Betting On All UK Racing “Grassroots” Hunter Chase (June 9th) riding Always Archie for Tim Vaughan. Evan finished the season in 5th place in the Gentleman Riders’ National Championship.
April James Bowen (Wales) for a flying month that included a treble and three doubles click here to read more. Despite not turning 16 till March, James was soon on an upward trajectory as this season’s emerging star, smashing the previous novice rider record to finish on 30 winners, Novice Champion and in third spot in the Gentleman Riders’ National Championship. James has now turned Conditional and rode his first winner Under Rules, James is now a conditional jockey and rode his first winner Under Rules, Get Home Now trained by his father Peter Bowen, in a Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle at Worcester on July 5th.
May – June John Dawson (Yorkshire) for riding 5 winners between the flags and landing the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards Challenge Cup Open Hunters Chase at Kelso, before capping the season partnering Young Hurricane in the Pertemps Network Stratford Foxhunters Champion Hunter Chase at Stratford Racecourse on June 9th read more here
2017 – 2018 Jockey of the Month Award Winners

January: Tom Hamilton (Northern) Based in Ireland with Joseph O’Brien doing the week, Tom is a weekend plane hopper wracking up the the airmiles in search of sporting successs. Read more here

March: Maiden Maestro Tommie O’Brien (West Midlands) is this month’s winner, he told us about learning from experience, keeping it in perspective and what he love’s about the sport. Click here to find out what he said
April: A win in an Irish Point to Point is an unusual achievement for an English Point to Point Jockey – but that’s what kicked started Ed Doggrell’s (Wessex) season. He’s a third generation rider. Read more about him here
May – June: Phil York (South East) hit the 350 winner mark at Northaw in May. He told us how it’s always been about fun – and it still is – as the advert says “when the fun stops, stop” and he tells us he’s know intention of packing up yet. Find out more here
All PPORA Members are invited to submit nominations riders who have caught their eye over the previous month.
To make a nomination please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org
Your email should include:
- “Jockey of the Month Nomination” in the subject field
- Your Name and PPORA Membership Number (of known)
- The name of the rider you wish to nominate and the area in which they are based (if known)
- A summary (no more of 150 words) explaining their achievements in the preceding month and why you believe they would be a worthy winner of the award
The deadlines for receipt of nominations are shown below:
