2018 PPORA Grassroots Novice Rider Awards Winners

 

Novice Rider Award Catoon MontagePoint to Pointing  offers unique opportunities for riders wanting to experience the thrills and spills or race riding.   We provide the step into racing for many pony racing graduates, offer accessible race riding experiences for the true amateur rider, and, as a learning ground and supplier of young talent hungry for a career in racing, we make a valuable contribution to National Hunt racing.  Each season we champion leading Novice Riders, and in 2018 we also introduced 2 new awards – Pony Racing Graduate and Point to Point Graduate recognising the invaluable role played by Point to Pointing in providing opportunities for Pony Racers  taking the next step and for those wishing to gain experience, hone their skills and test their talent before taking the decision to pursue a career as a professional jockeys or trainers in the National Hunt Racing sphere – you can read more about these awards here 

The appearance of new riders at the start of each season is greeted with anticipation, and stimulates debate and excitement as we watch them progress over the weeks.  

Our Grassroots Novice Riders’ Awards presented at our annual Grassroots Awards Lunch are a celebration of the season’s emerging talent.

The Wilkinson Sword(novice men), sponsored by our long-standing supporters Dodson & Horrell,  and the Princess Royal Trophy (novice women), sponsored by specialist insurers Howden,  are prestigious contests, open to riders who, at the start of the season, are under 21 and have not ridden any winners in point to points or under “Rules”.

In 2018 we saw yet another talented youngster – Connor Brace – emerge from the powerhouse of Welsh Point to Pointing.  Aged 16 Connor rode his first winner on board William Money in the first Dodson & Horrell PPORA Novice Riders’ Series Qualifier at the PPORC Point to Point at Barbury in November.  He’s since amassed a total of 21 wins between the flags –  giving him decisive victory in the Dodson & Horrell sponsored Wilkinson Sword Award  – and rounded off his season with his first win over regulation fences in the White Swan Hotel Open Hunter Chase at Stratford on June 8th where his ride Robin des People got the better of Brave Jaq ridden by fellow Welshman Bradley Gibbs.  Connor has since joined the professional ranks as Conditional for fellow Point to Point Graduate Fergal O’Brien who provided Connor’s first winner Mighty Leader at Perth on September 10th click here to read more.

Yorkshire’s Jess Bedi, a textile design student who combines her studies with training and riding Pointers for her grandmother Sandra Barker, proved best of the new women riders under 21 this term.  3 wins on board Iron Chancellor saw Jess crowned in the Howden sponsored Princess Royal contest.    Click here  and here to read more about Jess.

The Harley Racing PPORA Novice Riders’ Points Series is open to all riders who begin the season with novice rider status, and is a points based contest with points awarded in all Novice Riders’ Race.  Prizes are awarded to the top three scorers in this contest.  Connor Brace also claimed victory here, with South Midlands based Billy Aprahamian runner up (click here to read more about Billy ) and Wessex based Ed Doggrell – April Howden PPORA Jockey of the Month –  finishing third (click here to read more about Ed)

The 2017 -2017 Wilkinson Sword is awarded to the leading Gentleman Novice Rider under 21 (as at 18th November 2017)  who had not ridden a winner under any Rules (excluding Arabian Horse Racing) before the start of the 2017 – 2018 season.

The winner was determined by the total number of point to point winners ridden in all races during the 2017 – 2018 season up to, and including, Sunday June 3rd

2018 winner: Connor Brace, South Wales and Monmouthshire, 21 Wins

All novice riders, as at 18th November 2017, are automatically included in this competition.  For 2017 – 2018 points will be awarded in every novice riders’ race up to, and including Sunday 3rd June 2018.

Points are awarded as follows:  Win – 4 points, 2nd – 2 points, 3rd – 1 point
