National Fixtures
Great season ahead
The UK point-to-point season begins this year on November 30th. By the time it finishes on 13th June 2009 with the Torrington Farmers fixture at Umberleigh, 212 meetings will have taken place (weather permitting) on 117 different courses.
There are two new venues for 2009 - Whitfield, a new location for the Grafton’s meeting on May 17th, and North Carlton, to be used by the Burton (Feb 1st) and the Blankney (March 1st) in place of Market Rasen racecourse. With Weston Park now closed, the Albrighton fixture on January 25th has been moved to Bangor and the Meynell meeting on May 24th now takes place at Garthorpe.
There are seven fixtures taking place before the turn of the year, including a revival of the Thames Valley Club at Tweseldown on December 7th and a new fixture for the Farmers Bloodhounds at Dunthrop on December 14th.
Robert Waley-Cohen, chairman of the Point-To-Point Authority, said: “The sport is coping very well indeed in the face of any number of tough external trends, not least the weather. There is a solid demand and growing interest for country racing from participants and spectators alike, and we expect the forthcoming season to provide great sport and a great spectacle for all involved.”
