Equine 'Flu Jabs

The BHA requirements for vaccination against equine influenza are clearly laid out in Point to Point Regulations 36-38. Owners and trainers are reminded that equine influenza is a serious respiratory disease which can have profound effects on racing (as has been experienced in Australia recently) if the immunity of the population is compromised.

BHA Veterinary Officers will be attending an increased number of meetings this year, and at some of those meetings the focus will be on inspection of vaccination details in passports.

The Stewards will be advised in the case of incorrectly vaccinated (or unvaccinated) horses, and penalties may be applied.

From a wider perspective, the probable arrival in this country of some more exotic, especially insect-borne, diseases is likely to result in the introduction of further vaccination requirements.

It is important that the industry understands, and follows, vaccination requirements both to protect their own horses, the wider population, and the racing programme.
